TN50#178_Hate To Lose_21 October_2024
Hi Team,
Today I want to talk about hating to lose, you can read this post in less than 3 minutes and listen to the linked podcast in in 31 minutes; that’s less than 35 minutes total. So let’s go!
Happy Monday and welcome to The Next 50 #178. I like to think of personal performance in 3 components: physical, mental and emotional. My framework focuses on 4 Buckets: Eat, Sleep, Move and Think. This blog is my sandbox for sharing information that you might find useful for your personal performance.
Don Yaeger made his initial marks on the world as a sports journalist, including 10 years as the associate editor of Sports Illustrated. In that journalistic endeavor Don talked to 2,500 professional athletes and he asked them all the same question. “What is the one daily habit that you built into your routine that you believe gave you a competitive advantage?” Don summarizes the most common answer like this:
“The truly Great hate to lose more than they love to win”
Another interesting little factoid from Don is that every one of these athletes immediately had an answer that they didn’t hesitate to give. How many of you can answer that same question right now?
What is the one daily habit that you’ve built into your routine,
you believe gives you a competitive advantage?
Seriously, what’s your answer? We’ll wait.
My answer would be my morning routine that includes moving, coffee, devotions and hydration.
One more thing from the Greats:
“failure became a point of learning”
As I listened to Mr. Yaeger talk about all this, I was reminded of the team I played on for many years as a SOF (Special Operations Forces) soldier and every point Don made that can translate from the world of sports to the world of combat and man-hunting, rang true. One big difference for us commandos is that our failures meant a lot more than losing a basketball or football game. It often meant losing assets or friends as in humans, K9s or equipment. Losing equipment, like a helicopter, sucked; having a friend or man’s best friend seriously wounded or killed was unexplainably awful. But just like the sports team that lost a game, we learned from our failures and went right back out in the arena.
Sorry, got a little sidetracked there, back to sports! At this point, I hope that all of you are asking, “where did Alex hear Don Yaeger talk about all this?” To which I would say, right here dog, just click the link! It was a very concise little thirty couple minute podcast with Donald Miller.
Money Back Guarantee: Don Yaeger and Donald Miller talk about a lot more of the life lessons/habits Don learned from these sports greats that you can apply to your current situation, so check it out. I didn’t even mention “finding your chip”… But seriously, If you get to the end of the podcast and feel cheated, I’ll give you your money back!
Final Thought: IF you still haven’t answered the “one daily habit” question or you think your answer sucks; we should talk! Improving Personal Performance (EAT – SLEEP – MOVE – THINK) is part of every “right” answer, and I’d be happy to point you in the right direction, which may or may not be one of my programs! alex@fpp.llc
Who do you know that could use this information? I bet you can think of a couple folks before you click the next email, please share the post with your team and anyone who might find it useful and let me know what you think!
Have a good one,
Alex
