TN50#198_Great Coaching Comes Down To Psychology & Logistics_24 June_2025
Hi Team,
Doing anything in the bathroom when your left hand is in a brace and you are left handed – sucks! I broke the pinky metatarsal (bone) in my left hand exactly 3 weeks ago today, just after finishing my last blog on Mel Robbins’ recent book, The Let Them Theory. The irony of these two things happening on the same day is the stuff tragic comedies are made of and may be something I try to capture in a future blog! Soooooo, writing and pecking at a keyboard hasn’t been a very efficient use of my limbs. Not to mention, as mentioned, how comically hard everything in the bathroom is! And of course I’m talking about brushing my teeth – you are such a child!
One of my mentors and coaches, Chris Hauth, must have sensed that I was going to be running more, since pull ups are pretty much out of the question, so he, almost on que, got back on the mic for his, The Endurance Mindset, podcast. Chris is a former Olympic Athlete and Ironman Age Group World Champion turned mindset/athlete coach. I have had the good fortune to be one of his athletes and friends since 2022, I even ran marathons all around the world with him on the 7X – Human Performance Project in 2023.
You don’t need to be an ultra marathoner or even a marathoner to learn great lessons from a guy like Chris because like every extremely successful outlier I have had the good fortune to know and work with; they are all extremely good at the Basics (the why, how, what of a situation) and focusing their limited resources there before worry about the gimmicks or dare I say “hacks” that might help them.
To that end check out his most recent podcast, ep. 182 and learn about:
- What mindset to bring to a Grand Adventure – it’s one thing to be able to do the work, can you do the work after sleeping on the ground for 4 hours with 24 other stinky, loud competitors?
- When cross training is unproductive – it’s not cross training if you aren’t good at the other event
- Why getting up early isn’t always the answer – Bro! Get some sleep!
- How to identify burnout from training – definitely worth paying attention to!
Over 40 years of wisdom in 40 minutes; not a bad use of your time.

I’d love to hear from you, please reply to this email with your funny hand/foot/whatever in a brace story and any thoughts or questions on Chris Hauth’s ideas on being Adventure Ready and training. And please share this with your friends!
Have a good one,
Alex
