TN50#26, Let’s Talk About Fasting, 28 June 2021

Hi Team,

Happy Monday and welcome to The Next 50 #26.

How cool would it be if there was a way to fast for more than a day without being completely miserable   Don’t know what I am talking about?  Webster’s definition of “fasting” is “abstaining from food”.  Still don’t know what I’m talking about?  The Found My Fitness site has a great article on fasting, here.

I was first introduced to fasting back in 1993 as part of a leadership experience called, Ranger School.  I started Ranger School at a scrappy 162 lbs. and finished the last phase, Florida, at a scrawny 132 lbs.  I don’t think I ever liked being hungry but after Ranger School I definitely was not a fan.

For me a “fast with food” would be the answer and now thanks to Dr. Longo we all have the “easy” button on the Fast Mimicking Diet (FMD).

Dr Longo spent over 20 years developing a 5-Day FMC that allows you to reap many of the benefits of a full on 5-day fast without being as hangry. We can thank the National Institutes of Health and the University of Southern California’s Longevity Institute for their support as well.

The FMD promotes the following:

  1. Cellular Renewal – Your body goes into heavy duty recycle mode (autophagy) as part of its emergency response procedures.
  2. Enhanced mental clarity and performance – You think better, and we can all use that.
  3. Fat focused weight loss.

The trick is that the FMD doesn’t activate your “food sensing system”.  Having done a couple FMD’s I can tell you the first thing that I noticed was that there is almost no protein in the kit, you get about 800 Cals a day and there is only 15g of protein spread across those 800 Cals.

You can check out all the information above and more at this link.  The kits are over-priced but I usually have a coupon or two in my email so if you want to check one of these FMD’s out, just let me know and I’ll try to help you get the best deal.  Sidenote: Some friends and I started a 5-Day FMD today, I’ll do some post-game analysis next week.

No matter how tight your shot group currently is on your food clock there is always room for improvement, if you haven’t played with any fasts longer than a day, this is a great way to take it to the next level.

As always, I would love some feedback on this and please share it if you think it would be useful.

Have a good one, Alex
